What’s Swag Bucks?
It’s actually written as one word – Swagbucks – but never mind that. What is it?
Swagbucks is way for people to earn rewards for doing things that they already do every day anyway, such as:
- Online shopping.
- Searching the web.
- Watching videos.
- Playing games.
- Doing online surveys – not sure about this one, as most people probably wouldn’t bother doing online surveys if there was nothing to be gained in return.
Doing these activities earns you “swagbucks”, which can be exchanged for gift cards or used to purchase items. Anyway, here’s a video quickly explaining what Swagbucks is:
Sounds great doesn’t it? But there is one question that I know you want to know the answer to…
How Much are Swagbucks Worth?
Well, according to this article, 450 swagbucks will get you a $5 Amazon gift card. The problem is, you have to do quite a lot to earn that many swagbucks. For example, a 10-minute survey might earn you just 10 swagbucks. So you would have to do 450 minutes worth of surveys to earn that $5. That’s an hourly rate of just $0.67! Or to put it another way, each swagbuck is worth about $0.01.
How to Earn Your Swagbucks
You can shop at lots of popular online stores via Swagbucks and earn swagbucks back in return. For example, shopping at Topman will earn you 5 swagbucks for every $1 spent. That works out as a 5% cash back, which is okay. This incentive would probably cause you to shop more than you would otherwise, though. That’s just straightforward shopping psychology.
But I see what is happening here. The Swagbucks website must earn an affiliate commission for every customer they refer, and they are sharing some of that with you. The fact that the rewards tend to come as gift cards for particular stores (e.g. Amazon) makes it obvious what kind of business deals are going on here.
So you can also earn swagbucks by changing your default search page to the Swagbucks search page. However, I cannot see any information on how many swagbucks you earn each time you search. But you search online anyway, so no big deal. It just depends on whether you mind searching through Yahoo instead of Google because the Swagbucks search is powered by Yahoo. Again, Swagbucks must have a deal set up with Yahoo, where they get paid for getting people to use the Yahoo search engine via Swagbucks.
Are you addicted to YouTube? Yeah, me too. Well, how about getting rewarded for watching videos? Unfortunately, you have to watch a LOT of videos to get any decent kind of reward. For example, you might have to watch 3 videos to earn just 1 swagbuck. Plus, you’re probably not going to get the same wide selection here as you would on YouTube.
What? Only 3 games? That’s not a lot of choice! What if they are awful games? My bet is, you’re going to get bored pretty quickly. But you know that playing games are not going to get you rich anyway unless you are able to score a game testing job at a top software company.
Here they brag that every day you can complete a survey that gives you 70 swagbucks. Let me remind you, that’s far less than a dollar ($0.77 to be precise). So you’re definitely not going to get rich from doing the surveys. Also, some surveys you won’t get accepted to, so you will waste your time.
So as well as using gift cards to shop online, you can also buy things directly using the swagbucks you have earned. Well, that’s great…until you realise that it costs 1050 swagbucks to buy shoes. Let me remind you that 1050 swagbucks are equivalent to over 17 hours of doing surveys. Do you really need some new shoes that badly?
So, is Swagbucks Worth It?
So, just to recap, Swagbucks pays you about $0.67 per hour. Maybe that’s okay if you are doing things on swagbucks.com that you would have been doing anyway. It definitely doesn’t look like a way to build a full-time income online, though, so don’t expect to quit your day job anytime soon. You’re far better off learning how to build a profitable website.
What Do Others Say?
I find it extraordinary that this website gives Swagbucks 5 stars and says that doing surveys “sure beats digging ditches for minimum wage”. This person hasn’t done their math because last I heard the minimum wage in the USA is over $7 per hour, compared to $0.67 per hour doing surveys on Swagbucks.com. You’d have to spend more than 10 hours doing surveys to earn one hour of the minimum wage!
Here are some quotes from various contributors to the site:
- “Spend hours of your time to earn pocket change.”
- “You don’t think companies like this exist until you’ve seen Swagbucks”
- “Not good for making money”
- “be careful as they close accounts when they want!”
- “Complete waste of time”
- “Love Swagbucks & FREE gift cards!”
- “Swagbucks is one of the most fun and entertaining ways to earn extra money!”
- “swagbucks sucks”
- “If I could give a NEGATIVE number of stars, I would.”

He likes that it is free to join, easy to use, and has a wide range of prizes on offer. However, he doesn’t like the fact that you don’t earn swagbucks for every search, that Yahoo is the search engine, and that you won’t earn a lot from using Swagbucks.
He thinks it is worth using even just for the search engine, but also it’s worth trying out the other ways to earn swagbucks too. However, there are a lot of comments on this particular page saying how bad Swagbucks is. People saying that it’s a waste of time and that they can remove your account without good reason.
They say that you shouldn’t join if you are expecting to earn a lot of money through it. However, if you approach it with the attitude of getting rewards for fun things you already do online, then it’s worth trying. They do emphasize those that it is definitely not a scam.
“You shouldn’t quit your job to play games and take surveys all day. Going out of your way to earn swag bucks doesn’t make financial sense, but the program itself, when used responsibly, is actually pretty great.”
This person plans to use Swagbucks to get gift cards in order to buy her children their Christmas presents. I suppose that could work if you have spent many months casually doing things to earn swagbucks, then at the end of the year you can get some gifts for family members.
I’m really surprised that he gives it a rating as high as 74 out of 100, especially when you look at the table that compares it to Wealthy Affiliate. There are only 3 out of the 10 items ticked in the list, so really he should have given it a rating of 30 out of 100, right?
Maybe it’s because he was basing the score upon whether or not it is a scam. That would make sense considering his website is all about spotting scams. So he says it is legit, not a scam, but he does admit that it has very limited earnings potential.
