The Problem: Your Website is Slow
So, you’ve been finding that your website is running slowly? When you visit your site, it seems to take ages to load, and then when you click the various pages they take time to load too.
This is a problem because visitors to your website will get frustrated by it. Many will just not want to wait and will leave in search of another site. I’m sure you have been in that situation yourself, where you just sit there waiting for it to load and then you give up and go somewhere else.
What is Slowing Your Website Down?
There are many possible reasons why your website is not quite as fast as it could be. Often there are multiple causes that all slow it down a little bit, but which together all add up to a slow website.
Here are just some of the possible causes:
- Slow WordPress theme – unfortunately, some WordPress themes will slow your website down more than others. Yes, I know that you will have chosen your particular theme because it looks great. You may have even paid money for your theme. However, if it makes your website too slow then it’s all for nothing. Not many people will stick around to see your wonderful looking website if it takes too long to load.
- Slow WordPress plugins – yes, plugins can slow your website down. Some people take a simplistic view and say that the fewer plugins you have the better, but that’s not quite how it works. You see, some plugins are much slower than others. It’s possible to have lots of very light plugins and have a fast website, and it’s possible to have a few very heavy plugins that slow your website right down.
- Large images – if you have lots of large images on your site, this can definitely cause it to take longer to load. One big mistake many website owners make is to have a really big background image or large images across the top of the site. Don’t forget: people come to yourself to quickly get the information they are looking for. If they want to see nice pictures, they can go to Flickr.
So, I’ve already suggested three common things that can slow down your website, but there can often be many other issues slowing your site down. I can take you by the hand and lead you step-by-step through all the different things I know that can make a real difference to how fast your website loads.
