But before I can create a new website, I first need to decide what that website is going to be ABOUT. I need to decide on a niche.
Really, there are only two criteria that a niche needs to fulfill:
- You need to be interested in it
- There need to be related products that people will buy
Amazon is a great place to look for niche ideas because it sells almost everything. But I have several ideas for niches, so how to I decide which one I should choose? I don’t want to choose all of them because I wouldn’t have time to get several websites off the ground all at once.
How to decide on a niche…
So, what I did was I came up with a list of several possible niches, and then did some research on each of them. Here are each of my different niche ideas.
Niche idea 1: Interesting Facts
I could create a website where I share lots of fascinating facts. This would be super fun for me, and I would probably never tired of writing about these facts. The problem is, I probably wouldn’t earn much money with this. Sure, there are books of interesting facts on Amazon, but if, for example, someone buys a book for $15, my commission from that is going to be quite small; and how many people are really going to buy books like that?
Niche idea 2: Meditation
As a long-time meditator myself, I could have a website where I share my own meditation techniques and tips. I could then promote various meditation books, CDs, and DVDs on Amazon. Again, this might not end up being mega profitable. Sure, people are interested in this kind of thing, but the products available are not particularly highly priced.
Niche idea 3: Making Electronic Music
I have been making my own electronic music for years, so I would love to have a website that talks all about electronic music. I could share tips and techniques and promote synthesizers and music software. This would be great because I am very interested in this topic and there are also some good high-end products out there, so I could get some good commissions in this niche.
I could also possibly have a forum where other electronic musicians could share their music and advice.
Niche idea 4: Photography Tips
I know quite a lot about digital photography, so I could have a website where I give my own photo processing tips. I could also review photo software like Photoshop. If I was to expand it to also reviewing cameras and photography equipment, there are some very expensive products there that could bring in some handsome commissions for me. The only thing is, I’m not quite as passionate about this as I am about music.
